Frequently Asked Questions

What happens after I purchase a KT-100 Handheld LASER?

Metal Analysis Group stocks KT-100S units in Houston, TX. After receiving payment, via Credit Card, Bank Transfer, or Purchase Order, your KT-100S unit(s) will be configured to meet the needs of your application. After which, a final quality check will take place and your unit(s) will ship out to your facility within 3-5 business days after ordering.

Prior to receiving the analyzer, you will receive a quick training video to get you started. Depending on your needs and application, a live virtual, or onsite training session may be included.

After confirming your training on the safety and proper use of the unit, your warranty will begin.

How long does the KT-100S or KT-100 Basic Handheld LASER take to start up?

About 30 seconds.

Can the KT-100S Handheld LIBS test metals other than Aluminum?

Yes. It comes with calibrations for Al, Co, Cu, Ni, Ti, and All Steels.

Can the KT-100S Handheld LIBS identify all alloys?

No. Since LIBS needs to turn the material into a plasma, materials with higher melting points, such as Tungsten, are difficult to test. While LIBS can tell you that tungsten is present, it has trouble differentiating between different Tungsten alloys.

Can the KT-100S Handheld LIBS test for Carbon content?

No. While it cannot positively identify Carbon content, it will be able to identify some Carbon steels based on other elements present. Much in the same way as Handheld XRF devices.

Is argon required for testing alloys with the KT-100S Handheld LIBS?

No. Since the KT-100S is not looking for Carbon, it does not need argon to test metals.

Can the KT-100S Handheld LIBS test samples that are corroded, painted, wet, coated, or plated?

Not without preparing the surface first. LIBS is very much a surface technique so any surface contamination or impediment would be included with the plasma and affect the results. For that reason, the KT-100S analysis time includes 1 second of Drill Down by default to improve data quality. For heavy corrosion or other contamination, you must use a grinding medium to remove the surface layer until you can see the base metal.

Does the KT-100S Handheld LIBS use X-rays or radiation?

No. There is no radiation or X-rays used in a LIBS analyzer. LIBS is a laser-based technique that uses the laser to create a plasma on the surface of the metal and measure the light to determine the chemistry and alloy grade of the material.

What is the classification of the laser used in the KT-100S Handheld LIBS?

Class IIIB.

How long does the laser last in the KT-100S Handheld LIBS?

The laser is expected to last over 5 years.

Can the KT-100S Handheld LIBS hurt you?

Only when used other than as directed. The KT-100S emits an invisible laser beam that can cause eye damage when viewed directly at less than 1.5 meters. Always direct the beam away from eyes during analysis.

Are laser safety glasses required when using the KT-100S Handheld LIBS?

Laser safety glasses with an optical density of 3+ @1064 nm are strongly recommended but may not be required where there are additional controls (such as training) that prevent eye exposure within the 1.5 meters. It is recommended that end-users consider their specific use scenarios and level of operator training before deciding that laser safety glasses are not needed.

Does the KT-100S Handheld LIBS leave a mark on the sample?

Yes. The KT-100S does leave a small mark that is often easily buffed or polished off if needed. The size and depth of the mark depend on the sample matrix being tested. Most applications consider this to be a non-destructive testing (NDT) technique.

How durable is the KT-100S Handheld LIBS?

  • Dustproof, Rainproof, Shockproof
  • Certified to U.S. Military Standards, MIL-STD-810G & IP-54
